Though only 5'2" tall, Jack Daniel achieved great stature as a distiller at a very young age. To mark his 21st birthday, he bought a formal knee-length frock coat and a broad-brimmed planter's hat, which became his daily uniform for the rest of his life. Those who were acquainted with the man claim, "Once he got something the way he liked it, he never changed it." A striking figure with his big moustache, Jack Daniel never married but he was seldom without female companionship. He was also known to be a very kind man who donated generously to the local churches and charities (he also paid for the musical instruments to start the Original Silver Cornet Band).
